Marguerite Stas

Marguerite Stas, MD, PhD is a senior staff member in the Surgical Oncology Department of the University Hospitals in Leuven and professor at the KU Leuven, Belgium. Beside surgical and teaching activities, she is in charge of the vascular access program since 1988, involving mainly implantable ports and tunneled catheters for onco-hematology patients. Already in 1998, she introduced the ECG technique for catheter tip positioning. This technique became rapidly the standard approach for this purpose and belongs since then to the basic training of residents. In the last 10 years, PICC and Midline catheters were included in the access program, in a multidisciplinary and multi-professional setting, committed to patient’s care and research. She is president-elect and co-founder of the Belgian Vascular Access Network, a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to vascular access, and course director of workshops on implantation techniques and maintenance care for accesses devices
